We had picked out Jacoby and were excited to bring him home when he was old enough.
Our breeder Diane McDonough told us that we could pick up Jacoby on December 18, 2011, which was a Sunday.
It was also the exact day that Becky was scheduled to fly home from her first semester at Biola University in California. She did not know that she would be coming home to a brand new puppy.
We also did not tell Matthew.
So we planned on surprising both of them!
We drove down to Carver, MA on Sunday morning and picked him up. When we got home, Matthew was upstairs in his room.
So we decided to surprise Matthew by putting Jacoby in a cardboard box in the kitchen and asking Matthew to come down and open the box. We tried stuffing Jacoby in the box but he didn’t like it and kept wiggling out! So Steve told Katy to just bring Matthew down and he would stuff Jacoby in the box and close it just before he came in the kitchen.
It worked! Matthew turned the corner and there was a box on the floor with Jacoby moving around inside. Matthew couldn’t believe it! And we opened the box and took the picture above, our first picture of Jacoby (the first of many!) at our home at 36 Thomas Farm Circle.
After playing with him in the afternoon, it was time to drive to the airport to get Becky. The plan was for Katy and Matthew to go into the airport and for Steve to drive up with Jacoby in the back seat. Jacoby couldn’t have played his role more perfectly. He put his little nose right up to the door that Becky opened. Steve was filming everything but almost missed the first moment because he had forgotten to unlock the door!
It ended up being a perfect video, and Becky couldn’t have been more surprised!
What a great first day!
